Building financial confidence in Bristol's young people since 2014
volta-gleam started with a simple observation: most adults struggle with money because nobody taught them the basics when they were young. Our founder, after years in financial services, realised the gap wasn't in access to information but in making that information relevant to young minds.
What began as weekend workshops in a community centre has grown into a comprehensive educational programme serving hundreds of families across Bristol and the surrounding areas. We've maintained our core belief that financial education should be practical, engaging, and free from jargon.
Today, we partner with schools, work directly with families, and continue developing new approaches to help children understand money in ways that stick with them for life.
Our work is guided by principles that put young learners at the centre of everything we do.
Financial concepts don't need to be complicated. We strip away unnecessary jargon and focus on practical understanding that children can apply immediately.
Reading about budgets isn't the same as making one. Every session includes hands-on activities where students make real decisions with simulated or actual money.
An eight-year-old and a sixteen-year-old need different conversations about money. We calibrate our content to match cognitive development and real-world relevance.
Children learn best when lessons continue at home. We provide parents with tools and conversation starters to reinforce what their children learn with us.
Traditional financial education often fails because it treats money as an abstract concept. We take the opposite approach. Every lesson connects to decisions young people actually face.
Should you spend your birthday money now or save for something bigger? How do shops try to make you spend more than you planned? What happens when you put money in a savings account?
These questions become the foundation for deeper understanding. As students progress through our programmes, the concepts become more sophisticated, but the approach remains the same: start with real situations, build practical skills, then introduce the underlying principles.
